Guess the Word

Objective:

The activity is designed to boost visual sequential memory skills – the ability to remember and recall things seen, in sequence.

Related Values:
  • Focus
  • Alertness
  • Time Management
Materials Required & Preparatory Work:

Sets of cards, each set to consist of 6-7 cards. The words to be written on a set should be randomly selected, i.e without adhering to any particular sequential order.

Examples:

  1. Deities
  2. Nature
  3. Great men and women
  4. Saints
  5. Religions etc.,
How to play
  1. Children are divided into small groups, each group consisting of 3-4 children.
  2. The Guru hands over a set of cards to each group and explains the activity to them with the help of an example.
  3. Set 1 – NATURE (Clouds, rivers, sky, trees, moon, hills)
  4. From a group, a child shuffles the above 6 cards and then arranges them in a row in front of him.
  5. The remaining children in the group are given 2-3 seconds to memorize the sequence.
  6. Then the cards are removed and shuffled thoroughly once again, by the first player.
  7. Now one by one, the rest of the children in the group are given the set and those who are able to rearrange all the 6 cards correctly in the same original sequence, score points.
  8. The above 5 sets of cards prepared by the Guru may be rotated among the 5 groups, by turn.
  9. The Guru must also ensure that within a group each child gets an opportunity to be the lead player.
Variations:

Keeping the difficultly level of the children in mind, the number of cards in a set may be varied.

Tips to the Gurus:

While preparing each set of words, it must be remembered to select only random words which do not follow a particular sequence. (In other words, concepts like Purusharthas, which follow a sequence, may be omitted)
