The measure of His Love

Swami Karunyananda was a very revered devotee of Bhagwan Baba. He used to run a small Leprosy Hospital and home for the destitute and disabled. One day, a poor woman who was due to have a baby was brought to the hospital by someone who had taken pity on her, feeling that here at least she would get shelter and help. The woman had a two year old child that she was carrying in her arms. Swami Karunyananda got the woman admitted to the hospital and put the child in the care of some women.

One evening, all those working in the hospital went to see a movie. They came back around midnight and were startled to hear the cry of a new born baby. There was only one doctor and one nurse in this small hospital (who had of course thought that there was still plenty of time before the baby would be born!) and they both rushed in to find that the woman had already given birth to a son. The baby had been washed, wrapped in a white towel and kept in a cradle. The mother too had received due attention. They were very surprised and asked the woman who had taken care of her. The woman replied, “I called out and prayed; fortunately another nurse heard me and came.” “What nurse?” they asked in disbelief, “There aren’t any other nurses here.” “That one,” the woman said, pointing to Baba’s picture on the wall. “She was here a few minutes ago, now she has gone to attend to another patient.”

When Swami Karunyananda went to Puttaparthi, before he could say anything. Baba chided him gently saying, “Do see that things are kept in a more orderly manner in the hospital, it took Me a while to locate what I needed!”
