Materials Required:
- Blindfolds – 2
- Various “obstacles” such as boxes, chairs, books, table, bats, footballs, bucket etc.,
Preparatory work for the Guru:
None
How to Play
- The Guru divides her class into teams of two.
- An obstacle course is already prepared in a hall or outdoors by the guru, by placing the above items here and there randomly.
- A blindfold is tied on one player of a group, and he must stand at the “starting point” of the obstacle course.
- The second member must then guide the blindfolded member through the course, by calling out directions. (Ex. Go straight, Turn left etc.,)
- Based only on his partner’s verbal directions, the blindfolded child navigates through the hall successfully within the stipulated time.
- This is repeated by two players of the second group.
- At the end of it, the team that has the maximum number of pairs who are able to reach the finishing point within time is the winner.
Tips to Gurus:
- The roles of the guide and the blindfolded child can be reversed.
- This will enable them to elicit their varied experiences in both roles – both as a blindfolded person and as a guide. For example- How he felt when unable to see (from a state of helplessness, insecurity, frustration etc.,) and later when clear guidance was received from his guide (hope, trust, self-confidence, gratitude, determination etc.,)
- Then, as a guide, his feelings could be one of empathy, compassion, concern and caring – ultimately leading to self-satisfaction and inner joy!!
- A very appealing group activity providing them experiential learning in ample measure!!
