Spending time with the elderly
After a lifetime of working, raising families and contributing to the success of the nation in countless ways, senior citizens need to be treated with dignity that they rightfully deserve. Unfortunately, of late, the lives of many of them end up at Old age or Retirement homes.
A good seva activity that can ideally be undertaken by our group III balvikas students on a regular basis is spending some time, say an hour or so weekly, with an elderly person in their neighbourhood or in a known family, by visiting them.
It is important that the balvikas guru or the concerned parents introduce him or her to the elderly, in order to win her trust. The elderly desperately long for company and the balvikas child can spare some of his time in fulfilling this need.
As per the age, fitness and aptitude of the elderly, the student can engage her in meaningful activities-like reviving her old hobby, reading books for her, singing bhajans, playing games, teaching internet, or merely listening to what she likes to share.
Students are sure to feel truly blessed and fulfilling by bringing a smile on their faces along with joy and hope in their hearts. They develop respect for elders, come to understand their requirements and problems and learn to care and share.
