Significance of Lighting Lamps
The symbolism behind the long lines of lamps that are lit is profound. The lamps are all lit from one lamp which is the source of light for other lamps. This is similar to the wisdom that all beings come from one source – The Paramathma.
The omnipresent Divine principle which the festival of Deepavali (gathering of Lights) teaches us is: “Meditate on the one Param Jyoti out of which your own Jyotikas derive its power or shine; you are but a spark of that eternal universal flame. When this is realized, you are led from Tamas to Jyoti”.
The Light Leads Man from Darkness to Truth:
Tamaso Maa Jyotir Gamaya. Man should know the truth by gaining the light of wisdom. The truth about the purpose of our birth as a human being is to serve others and reach the higher levels of Divinity. Paropakaraath Idam Shareeram – Our body should be used to serve others. Else, man will be like a demon. Reading scriptures, attending Satsangs, company of the good etc., will help to attain this great Truth.
