INNER SIGNIFICANCE
Significance of floral worship:
It is the Hindu tradition to worship the Feet of God and the Guru with flowers.
Baba says, “The Divine Flowers that are pleasing to God are the flowers of virtues which we cultivate in ourselves. These are Ahimsa (Non-violence in thought, word and deed), Indriya Nigraha (sense restraint), Sarva-Bhoota-Daya (compassion towards all beings), Kshama (patience, tolerance, forgiveness), Shanti (peace), Sathya (Truth, the awareness of the Divinity within us, Dhyaana (vigilance in thought, word and deed) and Tapas (sincere and steady effort to cultivate these qualities)“.
Significance of worshipping the Lord’s Feet (Paada Pooja):
Touching the feet of the Lord or of elders, is a gesture of respect, humility and surrender.
Baba says, “Serving the poor, the illiterate, the diseased and the distressed is the Paada Pooja God welcomes most“.
Explanation :
After the great day of the coming of the Sadguru dawns in our hearts, our lives change and we express our love and gratitude for our Guru. He who shows us step by step the true purpose of life. We start our journey for the goal that is ultimate Truth. Now our consciousness rises higher as we have purified and cleansed our minds by Nama Sankeertana. Now, we claim closer kinship with our Guru, who is also God. So, we please our Sadguru by bringing to his Lotus Feet the True flowers of worship. These are the 8 flowers of our virtues, which blossom forth from day to day. This is the true Paada Pooja that He likes. Nature’s flowers fade and die, but these flowers of our hearts ever grow and are precious gifts for this Paada Puja. These flowers are :
- Ahimsa – love and non-violence in thought, word and deed.
- Indriya Nigraha – control of senses – (discipline of senses).
- Sarva bhuta daya pushpam – compassion for all being.
- Kshama – patience.
- Shanti – equal mindedness.
- Satya -The Truth that is in all beings.
- Dhyana – awareness of divinity within ourselves, (vigilance against negative thinking, speaking & acting).
- Tapas – Harmony in thought, word and deed.
Paada Pooja :
To serve the needy and the sick around us is true pooja, for the Lord is enshrined in the hearts of all our fellow beings as He is the indweller of each heart, he receives our offerings and service. Pada Pooja is the ritual of worshipping the Lord’s feet. Swami says, ‘the universe is the body of God. The thinkers, planners, scientists etc., are the head of God. The guardians of society such as Army, Navy and Air force are the arms of God. The business communities are the thighs of God and the labourers, the poor, the lowly are the feet of God.
‘Serving those who serve all, but who can claim service from none else is the Pada Pooja and Pada Namaskaram, I welcome most” says Swami.
In this 5th verse of Suprabhatam, we have reached the Manomaya Kosha, the Mind which is our subtle body.
It contains all strength, and all virtues to lay at the Lord’s feet. We surrender all our good and also all our bad qualities to Him so that He can correct us and guide us. This verse is a beautiful one, painting a word picture of flowers – full of fragrance and colour at Sai’s Lotus Feet. These small and tender feet must be enshrined in our hearts. Constant remembrance of His teachings is the right way to reach Him. This verse enlivens our Mind or subtle body and gives joy as we do Paada Pooja. It touches our inner core and increases our yearning for the Vision of God.
