Scene 1:
(Ravi’s home) - (Ravi, parents, Hari - maid’s son)
Father : Why are you looking so upset Ravi, You are not concentrating on the homework you are doing.
Ravi : Papa, are you buying me a bicycle for my birthday or not ?
I have been asking you so many times. I’m thinking about that only all the time. Unable to focus on anything else.
Father : Ravi, you already have a bicycle and that too, in good condition.
Ravi : Papa, it is two years old, all my friends have got new ones. Some of them are coming to school on their bicycles.
Mother : You are availing of the school bus.
Father : Moreover, you are seldom using your cycle.
Ravi : (yells) No, I will be happy ONLY if I get a new cycle for my birthday.
Mother : We got you a new badminton racquet last month and your joy knew no bounds and now you are demanding a cycle.
Father : Son, that racquet gave you joy only for sometime. After getting the cycle, you may demand something else next month, who knows. No end to wants!!
Mother : These things will satisfy you only for a short period of time. Can they give you permanent happiness? Never.
Ravi : Hmmm.. Anil is so lucky, every month his parents gift him new new items.
Mother : See, you start comparing with your friends which gives rise to envy.
(maid’s son Hari enters)
Hari : Namaste aunty! I have brought your milk packets.
Mother : Hari! You brought the milk so early today!
Hari : Yes aunty. My school is so far that I am unable to reach on time. I get punishment daily. I need to walk an hour now. So I must leave aunty.
(Hari leaves)
Ravi : Mummy, as you said I use my cycle very rarely. Daddy drops me to coaching class and I go to school by school bus. I pity Hari. He has to walk two hours to and fro. He would be too exhausted to focus on his studies. Why don't we give my cycle to him? Hari can use my cycle and reach his school on time.
Parents : (elated) That’s great, Ravi. Very good idea. We are proud of you, son!
(Both pat him happily)
