Spelling Spree

Objective:

It is a popular paper and pencil guessing game for two or more players in which one player thinks of a word, or a sentence and his partner tries to guess it by suggesting one letter at a time, within a certain number of guesses. The game stimulates new learning. It increases the child’s vocabulary, and helps him or her to recognise word patterns and spellings.

How to Play
  1. The Guru makes the children sit in pairs with a paper and pencil.
  2. She announces the theme (Example: NATURE).
  3. She explains how to go about the activity , giving an example
  4. One player thinks of a word related to Nature say, MOUNTAIN and represents it in the form of 8 dashes (_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _)
  5. He asks his partner to guess the word and suggest one letter at a time. (Example: N)
  6. Also, he fixes the maximum number of guesses that are permitted.
  7. As the letter N suggested by his partner appears in the word, the player inserts it in its correct place (say _ _ _ N_ _ _ N).
  8. If the partner’s next guess does not appear in the word, (example: K) the player writes the letter K far below the dashes and puts a small circle around it as shown in fig. 1
  9. In this manner, every wrong letter corresponds to one of the rings of the five- ringed chain as shown in fig. 2
  10. If the partner is able to guess correctly at his third/ fourth/ fifth chance, he is considered a winner. The chain remains incomplete, if only two of his guesses were wrong
  11. Now it is the winner’s turn to think of the secret word and proceed in the same manner.
