RAGDA CHAAT

It is a very popular chaat recipe in the streets of Mumbai. Making the same recipe at home is very hygienic and healthy too. It actually makes a complete meal. It has a combination of sweet, spicy, tangy flavour. Let us see how to make this ragda chaat at home.

Cook the soaked peas in the pressure cooker along with salt and pinch of turmeric for 5-6 whistles until peas turn soft but not mashed.

Chop the Onion, garlic and grate ginger.

In a blender add tomatoes and blend into a smooth paste.

Heat oil in a pan, add mustard, Jeera and Hing/asafetida. Then add chopped onions,  ginger garlic paste and fry for few minutes.

Now add cooked peas and cook for 5 minutes.

Squeeze lemon juice and garnish with coriander leaves.

Add chopped coriander leaves.

Garnish with chopped onions, tomatoes, Cucumber, grated carrot, sweet Tamarind Chutney, green Chutney and thin Sev.

Serves: 4 persons

Ingredients

  • Green peas ( dried) - 1 cup
  • Onions ( finely chopped ) - 1
  • Ginger garlic paste - 1 tsp
  • Chilli powder - 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder - 2 tsp
  • Garam masala powder - 1 tsp
  • Jeera powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Chaat masala - 1/2 tsp
  • Salt as required
  • Lemon juice - 1 tsp
  • Tomatoes ( finely chopped ) - 1
  • Potatoes ( boiled ) - 1
  • Oil - 2 tsp
  • Mustard , Jeera and hing

Method

  1. Soak dried green peas in water overnight.
  2. Chop the Onion and puree the Tomatoes .
  3. Cook the soaked peas in the pressure cooker along with salt and pinch of turmeric for 5-6 whistles until peas turn soft but not mashed.
  4. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard, Jeera and hing.Then add chopped onions,ginger garlic paste and fry for few minutes.
  5. Now add tomato puree and fry for few minutes.
  6. Add salt, chilli powder, coriander powder, Jeera powder, Garam masala , chaat masala and fry for few minutes.
  7. Now add cooked peas and cook for 5 minutes.
  8. Adjust the consistency of ragda
  9. Finally add boiled potato pieces and switch off the flame
  10. Squeeze lemon juice and garnish with coriander leaves.
  11. VARIATIONS : If u want little sweet taste you can add 1/2 tsp of jaggery at the final step. This enhances the taste of Ragda.
