TIPPILI or PIPPALI RASAM

Thippili Rasam or Pippali Rasam is an excellent therapeutic recipe with rich healthy goodness. It is very soothing and comforting especially when you are down with flu.  Thippili (Long pepper) is a flowering, fruit-bearing plant that is used for its medicinal properties.  Will grow easily in the kitchen garden. Long Pepper is commonly known as Arisi Thippili or Thippili in Tamil, Pippali in Hindi and has the scientific name, Piper longum.   Thippili  or Pippali rasam is an easy form to consume thippili. Let us see how to make this “drink and digest” rasam.

In a pan, heat ghee and saute tippili leaves for 2-3 minutes and leave it to cool.

In the same pan add little ghee and roast pepper , Jeera and red chillies and leave it to cool.

Transfer tippili, roasted pepper, Jeera and red chillies to a Blemder.

Blend into a smooth paste.

In a kadai, add chopped tomatoes, Turmeric powder, hing , salt and little water ,allow it boil till the tomatoes are cooked.

Now add Tamarind​ paste, allow it to boil for 2-3 minutes.

Then add grinded tippili spice mixture to it and boil for 1 minute.

Now add boiled dhall and little water  and simmer the flame.

Wait till it froths.

 

heat ghee in a small pan ,fry Jeera

and add to the rasam.

 

 

 

Tippili Rasam

Cook Time: 30 mins
Yields: 4 persons

Ingredients

  • Tippili leaves - 10- 15 no's
  • Toor dhal - 2 tablespoon
  • Red chillies - 2-3 no's
  • Pepper - 1 tablespoon
  • Jeera - 1/2 tablespoon
  • Tamarind - lemon sized ( soaked in Warm water)
  • Tomatoes (chopped) -2 no's
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Hing and Salt - as required.

Method

  1. In a pressure cooker , cook Toor dhall and keep aside.
  2. In a pan, heat ghee and saute tippili leaves for 2-3 minutes.
  3. In the same pan add little ghee and roast pepper , Jeera and red chillies and grind it along with tippili leaves.
  4. Chop tomatoes into small pieces .
  5. In a kadai, add chopped tomatoes, Turmeric powder, hing , salt and little water ,allow it boil till the tomatoes are cooked.
  6. Now add Tamarind​ paste, allow it to boil for 2-3 minutes.
  7. Then add grinded tippili spice mixture to it and boil for 1 minute.
  8. Now add boiled dhall and little water and simmer the flame.Wait till it froths.
  9. For seasoning, heat ghee in a small pan ,fry Jeera and add to the rasam.
  10. No need of curry leaves and coriander leaves,since this will dominate the flavour of tippili.
  11. VARIATIONS : Instead of tippili leaves, we can use tippili buds which is easily available in market.

This rasam is used as a remedy to treat cold , cough and chest congestion. Amazingly thippili has other wonder uses that most of us are not aware of. It is used to treat depression, all kinds of inflammation and diabetes. It also aids in weight loss. It has an anti - cancer, anti - depressant, anti - microbial, anti-fungal, analgesic and cardio protective properties in it.
