GREEN GRAM SUNDAL

Green Gram Sundal (Pachai payaru in Tamil) is rich in protein and is a healthy evening snack. Its very simple to make. It is an important prasadam prepared during Navaratri.

Pressure cook green gram sprouts.

Heat a tsp of oil in a kadai/pan, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add hing, urad dal, red chilli, curry leaves.

Add the cooked green gram sprout.

Add grated coconut and mix well.

GREEN GRAM SUNDAL (Pachai Payaru Sundal)

Yields: 4 cups

Ingredients

  • Green gram - 1 cup
  • Grated coconut - 2-3 tbsp
  • For Seasoning : Mustard - 3/4 tsp, Hing - a pinch, Urad dal - 1/2 tsp, Red chilli - 1, Curry leaves - few

Method

  1. Pressure cook green gram sprouts with less water, salt needed for 1 whistle. The green gram should be just cooked, not over cooked. Drain any excess water.
  2. Heat a teaspoon of oil in a kadai/pan, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add hing, urad dal, red chilli, curry leaves. Toss till dal changes to golden brown in colour.
  3. Add the cooked green gram, grated coconut and mix it well. Check for salt and remove from flame.
  4. Variations : Instead of sprouts, the green gram can be soaked for 4-5 hours to make this sundal. Chopped green chillies, grated mango, grated carrots can be added along with grated coconut.
