BLACK CHANNA SUNDAL

Black channa or Kala channa, chickpeas recipe is often made during Navarathri and Ganesh chaturthi festival. This sundal is a very good evening snack for children and elders. Let us see how to make this healthy black channa sundal.

Wash and soak black channa  overnight or 6 – 7 hours.

Pressure cook with little water and Salt until channa becomes soft and well cooked (for 5 -6 whistles).

Once the pressure is released, open the cooker. Check if cooked well.

In a pan, heat oil, add Mustard seeds, when it splutters add Urad dhal, red chillies and fry till dhal turns golden. Now add Curry leaves and saute for a second.

Then add cooked channa to the seasoning, saute for 2-3 minutes.

Add the Grated coconut and serve hot

Prep Time: 10 mins (excluding soaking channa time)
Cook Time: 30 mins
Yields: 4 Servings

Ingredients

  • Black channa - 1 cup
  • Grated coconut - 1/4 cup
  • Oil - 2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Urad dhal - 1 tsp
  • Red chillies - 2 No's
  • Curry leaves
  • A pinch of hing
  • Salt as required.

Method

  1. Wash and soak black channa overnight or 6 - 7 hours.
  2. Pressure cook 5-6 whistles with half glass of water and salt.
  3. Once the pressure is released, open the cooker. Check if cooked well.
  4. Strain the excess water from the cooked channa using strainer and keep aside.
  5. In a pan, heat oil, add Mustard seeds, when it splutters add Urad dhal, red chillies and fry till dhal turns golden.
  6. Now add Curry leaves and saute for a second.
  7. Then add cooked channa to the seasoning, saute for 2-3 minutes.
  8. Add the Grated coconut and serve hot.
