SWEET SEEYAM/ SUZIYAM

Sweet Seeyam is a unique dish which has sweet stuffing made of jaggery, grated coconut and Bengal gram dal mix in the centre and is coated with rice and urad dal batter on the outside. This sweet is mostly made for Deepavali. We have given below a very easy stepwise recipe that will be a success even for first timers.

 

Ingredients for Outer covering batter- Idli rice and Urad dal

Ingredients for filling- Channa dal, grated coconut, powdered jaggery and cardamom

Soak the rice and dal separately for 2 hours. Grind them to a smooth paste adding little water.. this may take around 20 to 30 minutes. Add salt to the batter

Dry roast channa dal for 5 minutes. add equal amount water and pressure cook for 4 whistles. The cooked channa dal should be like shown in this photo- cooked but dry. Incase there is excess water, drain it and heat on low flame till water evaporates

Add the channa dal and cardamom to the mixie jar and powder. The add grated coconut and jaggery and run it again to form a tight paste as shown

Make round balls of this filling mix.

Keep the filling and outer covering batter ready

Heat oil in a wide pan. Dip the filling balls in the batter


Drop the balls in the hot oil

Keep stirring and fry on medium flame for 5 minutes till they turn golden brown

SWEET SEEYAM OR SUZIYAN

Ingredients

  • Idli rice- 3/4 cup
  • Urad dal -1/4 cup
  • Channa dal (kadalai paruppu) - 1 cup
  • Jaggery -3/4 cup
  • Coconut grated -1/2 cup
  • Cardamom - 5
  • Oil for deep frying

Method

  1. Soak rice and urad dal separately for 2 hours
  2. After 2 hours, drain the water from urad dal and add to wet grinder with little water
  3. After 10 minutes, as the urad dal is grinding, remove water from rice and add rice to the grinder
  4. Add little water in the middle as the batter thickens. don't add too much water like for dosa.
  5. After around 30 minutes, remove the batter and have it ready. This batter need not ferment. Add little salt .
  6. Take a small pressure cooker and add channa dal. Dry roast n low flame for 5 minutes
  7. Add 1 cup water to the dal and pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles
  8. The dal should be cooked but dry . If there is excess water, drain it and keep the dal on low flame with open lid for sometime till water evaporates
  9. Add the channa dal and peeled cardamom to the mixie jar and grind to powder
  10. Next add grated coconut and run it once to mix
  11. Next add powdered jaggery and pulse few times till all ingredients get mixed evenly
  12. Take out this mix and make balls. This will be the filling for the sweet seeyam
  13. Heat oil in a wide pan
  14. Dip the sweet balls in the batter and deep fry in oil
  15. When the colour changes to light brown, remove them from the oil
  16. Sweet Seeyam ready

Additional Info

The rice+urad dal batter used for covering is tasty and crispy. Many use the maida batter which makes it too chewy. Incase you have idli batter ready, you can use it as outer covering .
