If you do not wash your hands before you eat, the dirt from your hands goes into your stomach. It will make you ill. You are strong and healthy because your mother cooks good, clean food. She gives you clean, boiled water to drink. Being clean and tidy keeps you healthy. We must eat all vegetables and fruits. When we offer food to God before we eat, it becomes prasad. What is honesty? Honesty is always speaking the truth. Honesty is also never taking things that belong to others. If people tell lies, cheat or steal, it is such a shame when they get caught. Even if they do not get caught at once, it hurts inside because they are scared of being found out. This is a terrible feeling. Suppose you don’t do homework one day and the teacher asks you if you did it, and you lie, then you are afraid all day that the teacher will see the book and find out. Isn’t it easier to tell the teacher the truth that you did not do it , Suppose your friend brings a nice new pencil box to school. He leaves it behind and you find it. What will you do? You will keep it safe and return to your friend the next day, won’t you? If you don’t, you are not being honest. Imagine how happy your friend would be to get his pencil box back! But, if you don’t give him, won’t he be unhappy? Can you be happy if your friend is unhappy? Won’t you be sad if you lose something in the class? Once upon a time there lived a deer with her young fawn. One day, she went into the forest, looking for grass. She was caught by a big lion. The lion was about to kill her. The deer thought of her little fawn, waiting for her at home. Crying, she begged the lion. “I have a little fawn, There is no one to look after my baby, just give me a little time. I will go back and give my little fawn to my friend-. and I will come back and you can eat me.” The lion laughed loudly. He said. “ Am I a fool to let you go? If you go home, are you a fool to come back?” The deer said, “Please believe me. I have never told a lie in my life. I will never lie. I will come back. The lion agreed to let her go. The deer rushed home and took her fawn to her friend. She told them her sad story. The friend and the fawn begged her not to go back. But the deer said to them, “It is better to die than to lie.” She said to her calf, “Always speak the truth. Live an honest life.” Then she went back to the forest. The lion was waiting. He thought, “Did I make a mistake? Will the deer come back just to keep her word?” Then he saw her coming. He could not believe his eyes. The deer said Thank you for your kindness. Now I am ready to die. You may kill me.” At this even the cruel lion’s heart melted. Tears fell from his eyes. He said, Your love for truth has changed my heart. I shall not kill you.” The deer went home happily.

Once there lived a poor woodcutter who was honest and hard working. He went into the forest every morning to cut wood. In the evening he would sell it and earn some money. He lived in a small hut and had an old axe with which he cut wood. One day, he had gone to the forest as usual to cut wood. He chose a spot on the banks of a lake and started his work, Suddenly, the axe slipped from his hand and fell into the lake. It sank into the waters and disappeared. The poor woodcutter did not know how to swim. He sat by the lakeside and cried loudly. As he was weeping, an angel rose from the water and asked, “My dear woodcutter, why are you weeping?” The woodcutter greeted her humbly and told her that his axe had fallen into the river and he did not know how to get it out. The angel suddenly disappeared into the water and came up again with a golden axe in her hands. “Is this yours?” she asked. The woodcutter shook his head and said, “I am a poor man. Where would I get a golden axe from? It is not mine.” The angel disappeared under the waters again and came out once more. This time she had a silver axe.Showing it to the woodcutter she asked, “Is this yours?” The woodcutter shook his head again and said, “I am a poor man. Where would I get a silver axe?” The angel once again disappeared under the waters again and reappeared. This time she had an iron axe.“Is this yours?” she asked. The woodcutter nodded his head in great joy and said, “Yes, it is mine. Thank you so much. Without this axe, I would not be able to cut wood. I would have starved.” The angel was very pleased with his honesty. She not only gave him the iron axe but also gave the golden and silver axes as reward for his truthfulness. The grateful woodcutter thanked her profusely and returned home. Everybody in the village came to know of his good fortune. In the village, there lived another woodcutter who was very dishonest and greedy. He also wanted to become rich like the poor woodcutter. One day he picked up his axe and going into the forest reached the lakeside. He threw the axe into the lake and then started crying loudly. The angel arose after a time and asked, “Why are you weeping, my good man.” “I am a poor woodcutter earning my living by cutting and selling wood. My axe has fallen into the lake and I am unable to get it out,” he replied. Then the angel went down into the waters and came up with the golden axe in her hand and asked, “Is this yours?” The greedy man stretched his hand to grab it from her and cried out, “Yes, yes, it is mine.” The angel was very angry with his dishonesty and greed. “You liar, you are dishonest and greedy. Go away from here. You don’t deserve any help from me.” So saying, she disappeared into the waters and did not come up again. The greedy man, not only did not get the gold and silver axes, but he also lost the one good axe that he had.Story

Little Lata broke a beautiful jug in the kitchen. She was very frightened. She was alone at home and knew that no one had seen her do it. So at first she thought that she would put the blame on someone else if her mother asked her about it. But her little inner voice began to talk to her, “Lata, you know that no one else has done it. Why do you want to hide the truth? Tell Mummy about it. At first she will definitely be sad and angry about it, but she is sure to forgive you. She always asks you to speak the truth, doesn’t she? Even your school teachers insist upon the truth, don’t they?” So Lata approached her mother. She told her the whole truth of how the jug had fallen from her hand when she was trying to lift it from the high shelf. Oh! What relief she felt after speaking the truth. Then she slowly raised her eyes and looked up to see if her mother was very angry with her. But No, Mummy took her in her arms, kissed her and said, “My child, I am so proud of you. Always stick to the Truth, for Truth is God.”Story

Gurur Brahma GururVishnu Gurur Devo maheshwarah Once there was a great sage Dhaumya who had many disciples. One day a hefty looking boy, entered the hermitage (ashram) of Dhaumya Rishi. He was covered with dust and dirt. His name was Upamanyu. The sage admitted Upamanyu and kept him with the other students. Upamanyu lacked in many good qualities that a student should possess. Firstly, he did not have much interest in learning the scriptures as he found them very difficult. He could not learn things byheart. He was not obedient either. Sage Dhaumya was a highly enlightened soul and was a Guru in the true sense of the word. He knew how to tackle this boy. In spite of of all the faults and defects the boy had, the sage loved him dearly and much more than he loved the other students. Upamanyu received so much love from his master that too began to love his Guru. His love towards his master developed so much that he was willing to do anything for his master.Sage Dhaumya knew that the time has come to tackle the boy. The only cause for Upamanyu’s defects was that he overate which made him dull and unhealthy. Dhaumya wanted Upamanyu to control his tongue & eat only as much as was necessary for the body. One day, Sage asked Upamanyu to take the cows to graze in the morning & return in the evening. Dhaumya’s wife cooked some food and gave it to Upamanyu for his afternoon lunch. But Upamanyu was a big eater. The food given to him was not sufficient. So he would milk the cows and drink whenever he After a few days, Dhaumya found that Upamanyu had still not shed the extra fat from his body. When he asked Upamanyu about his diet, he came to know what Upamanyu had been doing as Upamanyu spoke the truth. Dhaumya told Upamanyu not to drink milk without his master’s permission as the milk did not belong to Upamanyu. As the boy loved his master very dearly, he readily agreed to obey him. But Upamanyu could not control his hunger. In the afternoon, when the calves sucked milk from their mother’s udder, Upamanyu would cup his hands and drink the milk that fell from the calves mouth He thought he was not disobeying his master as he was not milking the cow for himself. came to know the reason. He explained to Upamanyu very lovingly that it was a very bad thing to drink the milk that fell from the calf’s mouth and that it would cause harm to his health. The boy promised not to do it again. But one day in the afternoon, Upamanyu was so hungry that he could not control his hunger. So he ate some fruits that were hanging from the branches of the trees. The fruits were poisonous and they made the boy blind. Unable to see, Upamanyu fell into a well. When the boy did not return for a long time and the cows came,Dhaumya went in search of the boy. Finding him in the well, the sage was moved with compassion. He taught the boy a mantra by which Aswinikumars ( the Doctor’s of God) appeared & restored the boy’s eyesight. Thereafter, the boy understood how greediness leads to disaster and total destruction. Dhaumya explained to the boy that greediness made the boy blind not only physically but also mentally. It made him dull-witted. Upamanyu gave up his habit of eating in excess. Thus he soon became fit, healthy & intelligent. “Brahma – the Creator” Brahma- the Creator,Sloka

Is there any need to be scared of anything? God loves you very much. Whenever you are afraid or feeling alone think of God and call Him to help you. Long, long ago, before the dawn of civilisation. India was full of thick forests. In one of these forests lived an elephant king, Gajendra One day, Gajendra went for a walk, accompanied by his herd. It was summer evening and a cool breeze was blowing. Playfully breaking off the green branches of the trees and munching the leaves, they wandered for a long time and covered quite a distance. Then, in the midst of a thick clump of trees, they came across a huge lake of crystal clear water, full of lotuses. The elephant king was drawn towards the lake, which looked so inviting. He entered the lake along with his herd. They filled their trunks with water and sprayed it on one another playfully. When they lifted their trunks and blew out the water, it formed a fountain and touched the sky. Thus they played for many hours. It was getting late and they had to return home. One by one, they started coming out of the lake. The last one to come out was Gajendra himself. As he was doing so, a crocodile shot up from under the water and caught hold of his foot. Gajendra jerked his leg. The crocodile was alittle shaken but did not let go. Gajendra tried again and again to pull his leg free, but to no avail. Now a fight ensued. Gajendra pulled the crocodile towards the banks while the crocodile pulled the elephant towards the centre of the lake. Both being equally powerful, neither could win. Each succeeded alternately, but only partially, thus neither of them was free. The fight continued for many years. Still neither gave up. The poor herd of Gajendra stood helplessly on the banks, hoping that Gajendra would soon become victorious, but in vain. The crocodile was in his own element, gaining strength day by day, while Gajendra, away from his home, got weaker and weaker, until one day he knew he could not fight any more. What was he to do now? His strength was ebbing away and so was his courage. He realized that God alone could be his protector. He stopped fighting and lifting up his trunk, cried out in despair, “ O Lord of the Universe, who has created us all, protect me from the clutches of this terrible crocodile. Sages say you cannot be seen except with the inner eye. Wise men say that you are the shelter of the shelterless, the wealth of the poor, and the strength of the weak. I have lost all hope and faith in my own strength. Please come and rescue me from this terrible enemy. I have none but you as my refuge.” The cry from his heart went straight to Lord Vishnu, who was in Vaikuntha playing a game with Lakshmi. While playing, he had tied the end of Lakshmi’s saree to his dhoti. When he heard the cry of Gajendra who was in great distress, He rose in a hurry, forgetting everyone. Like a mother who rushes to the side of her baby when it cries out, Lord-Vishnu ran out to the elephant king. He took His Chakra in hand and sent it flying to cut off the head of crocodile. The Lord blessed Gajendra, who praised Him in several hymns. Thereafter, the elephant king lived happily with his wives, continuously remembering the Lord and singing His glories. “Say Sairam”
