Buddha Poornima, also known as Buddha Jayanti, is the most sacred festival in Buddhism. It falls on the full moon of the fourth lunar month Vaisakh during the month of May. This day commemorates three important events in Buddha’s life: His birth, His enlightenment and His attainment of Nirvana. There is also a deep inner meaning of the term “Buddha Poornima.” Buddha represents “buddhi” or wisdom and Poornima is a “complete state” or perfection. Thus, Buddha Poornima is the day on which Prince Siddhartha perfected His wisdom to become a Buddha.
