PERIOD 20 – GOD IS YOUR BEST FRIEND

VALUE : FAITH (Story Of Jatila)
  • Once upon a time there was a small boy named Jatila who lived with his mother at the edge of a small forest. His mother was a poor lady who worked hard. Jatila had lost his father when he was very small. When Jatila was 6 years old, his mother decided to send him to an ashram school for his studies. To reach his school the boy had to cross the forest.
  • For a few days, mother went with him to show him the way. Then, as she had to go to work, she told him to go alone.
  • Early in the morning Jatila took his lunch packet and set out for school. At first he was happy as he walked along in the early morning fresh air. Watching the rabbits hopping about and listening to the sweet song of the birds he felt very happy.
  • But when he came to the forest he felt so alone. There were big trees around and here and there were dark shadows moving in the breeze. Jatila was frightened and ran as fast as he could. He did not stop at all till he reached the school. After school when he had to go through the forest again he was filled with fear. He raced through the forest till he reached the safety of his home and mother.
  • The next day Jatila refused to go school. “It is so lonely in the forest, mother. I cannot go alone. I wish you would take me to school. I cannot go alone.” Poor mother was worried. She had to go to work. How could she walk with him? “O God, please help me! I am alone, please look after my son.” She prayed. Then she told Jatila, “Son don’t be afraid. When you reach the forest call out to Madhusudhan who is your elder brother. He will surely walk with you to school.”
  • Jatila had full faith in his mother’s words. Next day when Jatila entered the forest he called out “Brother Madhusudhan, please come soon. I am frightened. Mother said you will come as soon as I call you. Please come soon.” In answer he heard the sweet notes of flute and soon saw a lovely, young curly-haired boy coming towards him. “I’m here brother!” The boy with the flute, smiled and hugged him. Jatila felt so happy and safe! Holding hands, chatting and laughing they both skipped along through the forest.
  • “There now go to school. In the evening call out for me and we will go back home together!” So saying brother Madhusudhan waved to him and walked away. When Madhusudhan was far away he once again turned back and waved to him. Jatila too waved back feeling so very happy.
  • Finally Madhusudhan disappeared!
  • Now Jatila was very happy to go to school. Many days passed. Every morning and evening Jatila would call out to Madhusudhan and together they would walk through the forest. One day his mother said,” Son, I’m so happy and proud of you. You are going to school alone, without fear!” “Mother, brother Madhusudhan is so kind. He plays the flute so well and tells me such nice stories I enjoy his songs too.So I love to go to school.”
  • Mother was puzzled. “Did you meet Madhusudan?” she asked. “Of course mother, he walks with me everyday. So why should I be afraid? Please give my tiffin box soon. Madhusudan will be waiting for me! I must hurry.”
  • After Jatila left, mother quietly followed him, down the road. Yes, she heard her son call out to Madhushudan.
Yes she too heard the sweet notes of the flute, and saw the lovely curly-haired boy come out from behind the trees. Cheerfully he greeted Jatila and together they disappeared into the forest.
  • With tears in her eyes, mother hurried back to her shrine room and wept with joy, at the feet of her Lord.
  • This is the greatness of Lord. He always listens to the sincere prayers of HIS devotees and comes to their rescue.

PERIOD 19 – THANKFULNESS

Do you say Thank you to someone when they help you? Whom all should we thank? Parents, Teachers,God, Friends… There are so many things for which we need to thank God. He made us and gave us all the talents we have. He also sent all His Messengers to teach us all how to live together happily. we should always say ‘thank you’ to people who do things for us. We can also do kind and helpful things for them. . We also need to thank God every day, for everything He has given to us. How do we show God as well as tell Him that we are thankful, when we cannot see Him? The best way to thank God is to love one another! Our thanks must come from the heart. To show how thankful we are to God we must do what will please God. We must obey God. Here is a story about a boy who learnt kindness from a little cat.

Story
The Loving Cat

Sunil was very lonely. He had no-one to play with. No friends lived nearby. What could he do? Just then a little cat came in through the window and jumped down onto the floor. “Shoo! Shoo!” said-Sunil. It was then that he could see that it was limping. “Ag, shame!” he said. “What is the problem?” He picked up the little cat and then he found that it had a sore on its foot. “Wait a bit. I know what I can do. I’ll put some ointment on it.” He carried the cat into the bathroom where he found the ointment and put some on the cat’s foot. The cat began to purr. It rubbed itself against his legs to say ‘thank you’. When the family had supper he fed the cat and when he went to bed it jumped up onto his bed and slept there all night. The next morning his mother said, “You know Sunil, that is not your cat and some people might be very worried to have lost their cat. You should go to see the new people who have moved in next door and ask if they know anyone who has lost a cat. Sunil picked up the little cat and went next door. He knocked on the door. Before he could ask if anyone had lost a cat, the little boy who answered called out, “Mommy, Mommy, here is someone with my cat!” He held out his hands to take the cat. He stroked it and hugged it. “I am so happy to have my cat back. I thought that he had run away and that I would never see him again.” Just then the mother came in. “Oh, thank you so much for finding our cat. A dog bit it and it ran away. I see that you have been very kind to him. You are welcome to come and play here. Thank you so much for finding him.”Because Sunil was kind he is now welcome to play next door.

PERIOD 16 – CLEANLINESS AT HOME AND SCHOOL

How can you keep your home and school clean? Mosquitoes and disease-carrying insects breed in dirty water rubbish heap. So it is important to keep our homes and the places around them clean.

Story
Monkey Manners

Anil went to a zoo with his parents. He enjoyed seeing all the big and small animals. He saw the squirrels, the majestic lion, the hissing snakes, the ducks in the pond, the different coloured fishes and so

He felt hungry after walking a such a long distance he asked his mother for something to eat. His gave him a banana. Anil loved bananas.

He was about to eat it when he saw a monkey looking at him. He gave his banana to the monkey another for himself

After eating the banana what did Anil do? He threw the peel of banana on the ground.

The monkey ate the banana and looked at Anil. It took its peel and threw it in the dustbin.

How ashamed Anil felt.

Even animals know how to keep clean. Cats dig holes, use them and then cover the holes by pushing mud in with their paws. Dogs and many other animals lick their babies and their own bodies. In they keep clean. We have many easier ways of keeping ourselves clean because we have hands.

Do not throw things out of a bus or car window. Sharpen pencils held over a waste paper basket. paper or rubbish only in dustbins. Never scribble or scratch on walls, desks or books. Put away your after playtime.

PERIOD 15 – CLEANLINESS

Cleanliness Is Next To Godliness

We should be clean in our thoughts, We should keep our body clean and wear, clean clothes. This helps to keep us healthy. It is nice to be near clean people, and we usually avoid those who are really dirty. By washing our hands after we use the toilet, and before we eat, we can stop ourselves getting many tummy problems like diarrhea. Even if our hands look clean they can be carrying nasty little germs that can make us sick.

Story
Anil and the football

One day Anil took his football outside and called his friend, “Come and we can go and play with this ball down on the field.” They played there happily for a long time. Then Anil gave a big kick and the ball went high into the air and landed in a big puddle. This was a very dirty puddle because the water came from the rubbish dump. Anil just went in and took up the ball and gave it a kick or two. Then because his hands were wet and dirty he wiped them on his trousers. Just then his friend said, “You know, I’m very hungry. I’m sure it is lunch time.” “Yes,” said Anil. “I’m also very hungry. Let’s go home.” He picked up his ball and off they ran. When Anil got home he rushed into the kitchen. His mother said, “Gosh, where have you been? You are very late and we have already eaten, but I didn’t forget you and have put some sandwiches for you in this lunch box.” Anil grabbed the sandwiches and went outside to eat them. Then mother came outside. “Goodness, you are dirty! Did you wash your hands before you ate your sandwiches?” “Oh, I forgot,” said Anil. During the night, Anil began to feel sick. He had a stomach ache and then he began to vomit. Oh, he was so sick! His mother tried to help him and by morning he was feeling a bit better, but weak. Mother said, “You know that I have told you again, and again how important it is to keep clean. I am sure you were sick because your hands were filthy when you ate your sandwiches yesterday. I hope that you have learnt a lesson. Wash your hands before you eat especially when you have been playing outside.”

Song

“Hear we go”

Here we go round the values tree,
The values tree, the values tree
Here we go round the values tree
On a bright and frosty morning.
This is the way we brush our teeth,
Brush our teeth, brush our teeth
This is the way we brush our teeth
To keep them bright and shining.
This is the way we comb our hair ….
To keep them neat and tidy.
This is the way we take a bath….
To look fresh and charming.
This is the way we clean our room ….
So properly and handy.
This is the way we eat our food….
Which makes us strong and healthy.
Come on let us pray to God…
Who keeps us always happy.

Being clean and tidy- clean means no dirt. Tidy means neat, everything in place. If you bathe you become clean. But if you do not comb your hair, would you look nice? No! You would be clean but not tidy. If you dress neatly and comb your hair then you are clean and tidy.

Everyone likes clean and tidy children. But this is not enough. You have to keep your things tidy. Then you do not have to search for things when you need them.

Story
Royal Horse and his bath
CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS

Once upon a time, a king had a very fine horse that he loved dearly. The royal horse always took bath in a particular clean pond.

One Morning, a very dirty horse was given a bath in that pond. When soldiers brought the royal horse for a bath to the same pond, he refused to enter the pond. The soldiers tried to push the horse into the pond, but he pushed and kicked the soldiers. The soldiers returned to the castle and reported to the king that the horse has gone mad. So the king sent his wise minister to the pond to know why the horse was acting so strange. The Minister observed that the horse was trying to shut his nostrils. The Minister immediately realised why the horse was behaving odd, it could sense the pond was dirty. The minister ordered the soldiers to take the horse to a clean pond. At the clean pond, the royal horse took bath without any problem, splashing and enjoying in the water.

We should always keep our surroundings, body and mind clean. Being clean and tidy keeps you healthy.

PERIOD 12 – RESPECTING GRANDPARENTS

Story

Once in very, very olden times, the people of Romania thought that the old people are an unnecessary encumbrance. They are weak and old and are unable to do any work. What is the use of keeping such people? They have already lived their life . So they decided to kill all the old people in the country. All the old people above the age of fifty were ordered to be killed. Lots of wise and old people were killed and a store-house of wisdom, knowledge and experience was destroyed.

A young man had great love and respect for his father. He did not want him to be killed. He hid him in a cellar and took good care of him. He always consulted his father in the time of difficulty and trouble. Nobody knew that the old man was living.

As the years passed, terrible drought overtook the country and brought famine in its wake. The people had a lot of sufferings, troubles and sickness. The stores of food grains were fully exhausted. They did not have a single grain of seed to sow in the land. They were helpless to solve this problem. Everybody looked worried.

The old man saw everything from his cellar. He asked his son the cause of his worry. The son told him about the problem the country was facing. The old man thought for a while and then said. “Don’t worry, my son! Don’t tell it to any one for the time being. Take your plough and plough up the lane in front of your house, then rake it over.” The son did just as his father had advised.

The rains came and wheat, barely, oats and beans began to sprout out of the ground at some places. Soon the news spread about this unheard thing. The people were surprised to see a man reaping when he had not sown anything. The old man had advised his son to do so, because he knew from his experience that when the people bring their crop home, many seeds drop on the ground in the way. He was sure that some seeds may be lying un-noticed in the lane in front of his house. He was proved right.

Soon the king summoned the boy to know the secret of his wisdom. After a lot of hesitation, the boy told the king that his old father had advised him to do so. The king was wonder-struck at the wisdom of the old man. He asked the boy to bring his old father to the court, because he wanted to reward him. After all the old man had saved the life of the whole nation by his sagacious advice.

After this incident, the people of that country did not kill their old people. They loved and respected them. The treated them as a valuable treasure for the nation.

Moral of this Story

Your parents and grand parents need your love and care. In old age people don’t have much to do, so they begin to feel lonely. They need your company. The old people become physically weak and inactive. The old age affects their mental health also. They become irritable and demanding like children. They seek your attention as the child does. The young people often do not understand this change in the behavior of the elderly people. Besides the physical care the old people need your company. Sit with them and give them your company. Make the old people feel that they are not an unnecessary burden, but they are most wanted and loved. Make them feel wanted, respect, loved and cared for. Keep your elders well and cheerful, if you want their guidance and earn their blessing in life.

PERIOD 11 – MOTHER IS YOUR FIRST GURU

Story
Kokila Vrat

Gandhi’s mother Putlibai observed everyday a vow known as ‘Kokila Vratha’. As soon as she completed the ritual, she would wait for the call of the Kokila (the Indian Cuckoo) before her breakfast. She would not touch food until the Cuckoo sang in his sweet voice. One day, she kept waiting for a long time, for the fortune bird to give her the permission to eat food. She calmly waited near the window looking for some signs of the cuckoo bird, but alas she found none. Little Gandhi noticed his distressed mother near the window. He quickly drafted a plan in his head and went out of the house to imitate the cooing of the cuckoo. He snuggled behind the bush and imitated the Cuckoo’s voice, and then ran inside the house to tell his mother, “Mother you can eat your food now as it has made its call.” Gandhi’s mother had been following this ritual for past many years. She quickly came to know about her child’s silly prank. Unable to contain her grief, she slapped Gandhi and wailed, “What sin have I committed that such a wicked liar should be born to me! Oh Lord!” Her misty eyes and broken heart of belief deeply moved Gandhi. That day he made a promise to her, “From this day, I will not utter falsehood. I will not do anything that would hurt my mother’s gentle heart”. Thus began his saga of truth.

Mother says
-When you say any action with the word mother says then the action should be performed. If mother says is not said then the action must not be performed.

Eg – Mother says stand up (action should be done) Sit down (children should not sit) Mother says brush your teeth (action should be done)
