In our Gita learning series, today’s slokas (32 & 33 of Chapter 1) describe the loss of wisdom that Arjuna suffers from!
வண்ணக் கோலங்களில் விநாயகர்
கண்கவர் வண்ணக் கோலங்களில் இன்று, ஞானக் கடவுள் விநாயகரை விதவிதமான வண்ணங்களிலும், வடிவங்களிலும் கண்டு மகிழ்வோம்! நமது பகவத் கீதைத் தொடரில், அஞ்ஞான இருள் சூழ்ந்த அர்ச்சுனனின் நிலை விளக்கும் முதல் அத்தியாய ஸ்லோகங்கள் 32 மற்றும் 33 பயில்வோம்!

किं नो राज्येन गोविन्द किं भोगैर्जीवितेन वा |
येषामर्थे काङ्क्षितं नो राज्यं भोगा: सुखानि च||1.32||
ARJUNA’S ANGUISH
kim no raajyena govinda kim bhogair jeevitena vaa
yeshaam arthe kaangkshitam no raajyam bhogaah sukhaani cha||1.32||
Meaning: For, I do not desire victory, O, Krishna, or pleasures or kingdoms. Of what avail is kingdom to us O, Govinda (Krishna), or pleasures or even life?
Indifference to acquisition of worldly pleasures is a sign of ethical and spiritual progress. However, Arjuna was far from it. It is only his delusion which is masquerading as mental achievement. It is nothing but a momentary temptation to adopt the method of renunciation in times of great sorrow and crisis bordering on escapism from reality.
கிம் நோ ராஜ்யேன கோவிந்த கிம் போகைர் ஜீ விதேன வா
யேஷாமர்த்தே காங்க்ஷிதம் நோ ராஜ்யம் போகா: ஸுகானிச||1.32||
येषामर्थे काङ्क्षितं नो राज्यं भोगा: सुखानि च|
त इमेऽवस्थिता युद्धे प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वा धनानि च ||1.33||
yeshaam arthe kaangkshitam no raajyam bhogaah sukhaani cha
ta ime’vasthitaa yuddhe praanaams tyaktwaa dhanaani cha||1.33||
Meaning: Those for whose sake we desire kingdoms, enjoyments and pleasures, stand here in battle staking their life and wealth.
யேஷாமர்த்தே காங்க்ஷிதம் நோ ராஜ்யம் போகா : ஸுகானிச
த இமேரவஸ்திதா யுத்தே ப்ராணான்ஸ்த்யக்த்வா தனானி ச||1.33||
பொருள்: கோவிந்தா, யாவர் பொருட்டு நாம் ராஜ்யத்தையும், போகங்களையும், இன்பங்களையும் விரும்புகிறோமோ அவர்களாகிய ஆசாரியர்கள், தந்தையர், மக்கள், பாட்டன்மார், மாதுலர், மாமனார், பேரர், மைத்துனர், சம்பந்திகள் முதலாயினோர் உயிரையும் செல்வங்களையும் துறந்தவராய் இங்கு வந்து நிற்கின்றனர். நமக்கு ராஜ்யத்தால், போகத்தால் அல்லது ஜீவித்திருப்பதால்தான் ஆவதென்ன?
