DHRITARAASHTRA’S QUESTION
dhritaraashtra uvaacha
dharmakshetre kurukshetre samavetaa yuyutsavah
maamakaah paandavaashchaiva kimakurvata sanjaya //1.1//
Dhritarashtra said what did the sons of Pandu and also my people do when they assembled together on the holy field of Kurukshetra, eager to fight, O Sanjaya?
In the entire Gita this is the only uttering of the blind king, Dhritarashtra. All the remaining verses are Sanjaya’s report to him about the happenings at the battlefield of Kurukshetra just before the war.
அர்ஜுன விஷாதயோகம்
த்ருதராஷ்ட்ர உவாச
தர்மக்ஷேத்ரே குருக்ஷேத்ரே ஸமவேதா யுயுத்ஸவ: மாமகா:
பாண்டவாஸ்சைவ கிமகுர்வத ஸஞ்ஜய //1.1//
திருதராஷ்டிரர் வினவியது:
ஓ ஸஞ்ஜயா! தர்ம க்ஷேத்திரமாகிய குரு க்ஷேத்திரத்தில் யுத்தம் செய்ய விரும்பித் திரண்ட நம்மவர்களும் பாண்டவர்களும் என்னதான் செய்தார்கள்?
போருக்கு இரு கட்சியினரும் அணிவகுத்திருப்பதை ஸஞ்ஜயர் விளக்குகிறார்.
सञ्जय उवाच
दृष्ट्वा तु पाण्डवानीकं व्यूढं दुर्योधनस्तदा।
आचार्यमुपसङ्गम्य राजा वचनमब्रवीत्।।1.2।।
Sanjaya uvaacha
drishtwaa tu paandavaaneekam vyoodham duryodhanastadaa
aachaaryam upasamgamya raajaa vachanam abraveet //1.2//
Sanjaya said Having seen the army of Pandavas drawn up in battle array, King Duryodhana then approached his teacher, Drona, and spoke these words.
ஸஞ்ஜய உவாச
த்ருஷ்ட்வா து பாண்டவானீ கம் வ்யூடம் துர்யோதனஸ்ததா
ஆசார்யமுபஸங்கம்ய ராஜா வசனமப்ரவீத் //1.2//
ஸஞ்ஜயன் சொன்னது:
அப்பொழுது ராஜாவாகிய துர்யோதனன்
அணிவகுத்து நின்ற பாண்டவர்களுடைய படையைப் பார்த்ததும் (துரோண)ஆசாரியரை அணுகி (பின்வரும்)வார்த்தையைச் சொல்லுவானாயினன்.
Duryodhana was thinking all along that it might not be possible for the Pandavas to mobilize forces strong enough to face his own huge army. But what he saw on the battlefield unnerved his position and hence he rushed to his teacher and exclaimed:
पश्यैतां पाण्डुपुत्राणामाचार्य महतीं चमूम्।
व्यूढां द्रुपदपुत्रेण तव शिष्येण धीमता।।1.3।।
pashyaitaam paanduputraanaam aacharya mahateem chamoom
vyoodhaam drupadaputrena tava shishyena dheemataa //1.3//
Behold, O Teacher, this mighty army of the sons of Pandu, arrayed by the son of Drupada, your wise disciple.
பச்யைதாம் பாண்டுபுத்ராணாமாசார்ய மஹதீம் சமூம்
வ்யூடாம் த்ருபதபுத்ரேண தவ சிஷ்யேண தீமதா //1.3//
ஆசாரியரே, உமது சிஷ்யனும் துருபதன் புதல்வனுமாகிய அவ்வல்லவனால் அணிவகுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும் இப்பெரிய பாண்டவப் படையைப் பாரும்.
